wed april 18
in 239 today
first priority is finish editing your news story (and complete the storyboard)
news stories will be shared in class Thursday
second priority is to update blogs for assessment this weekend ( few more easy ones have been added)
thirdly, in groups begin creating your alternative to facebook etc.....it's a new social media site of your own creation which hopefully will combine the best elements of what's out there in a fresh new format and will appeal to users
follow the guidelines on the handout and create your home page on the chart paper
( an appealing name is a must)....you will share your new site with the class next week
this can be done individually or in groups of up to 3 members
#20 celebrity
simple.....celebrity is a huge component of popular culture today
in this blog, list who you feel the ten biggest celebrities are today (in order)....obviously we can only create this list from our own perspective and we may not agree with the choices of others
so..go on...the ten biggest stars of today
list them in your blog
#19 Popular Culture....
Popular Culture is the arts, artifacts, entertainment, fads, beliefs and values that are shared by large segments of society.
basically, whatever is "in" and very well known/enjoyed
which one "thing" do you feel best represents popular culture as we near the middle of 2012?
be prepared to defend your answer in class
#17 facebook, twitter, tumblir, pinterest or stumble upon or nothing
pick a favourite and explain your choice

Review: Concept #5
Considerations:
everyone who "consumes" a media product brings his/her own background/experience to it (someone who has been harassed online may view Disconnected differently than someone who was not a social media user)
Review: Concept #4
Codes and Conventions: media products use a specific formula which we are familiar with in order to "tell their story"....hip-hop videos contain scantily-clad women, fruit carts are run over in a chase scene, coaches corner includes something about hockey , something about kids (hockey-playing kids) and something about the military
very rarely, something comes along that changes the rules and creates something new: Seinfeld, Nirvana, Toy Story
Review: Concept #3
Creeds.....values....what's right / what's wrong?
what's over the line?....what might be ok in Canada (swearing in the Osbornes ) might not be in the USA but may be different in another place (Denmark, for example)
the values of a society are constantly changing (Ellen no in the 90s but defo ok now)and the media reflects that (or does it determine that?)
Review: Concept #2
Construction
a) all media are careful constructions
nothing happens by accident...everything is carefully planned (ads, Nipplegate, Seahaven)
b) media products can affect or thoughts/behaviours/actions etc (violent video games, online sites, Pulp Fiction/desensitization)
Review: Concept #1
Commercial:
all media exists to make money....all media is owned by a few corporations...media is constantly looking for ways to maximize revenue...generally it's buying the thing (going to a movie) or the ads in the thing (tv commercials) or product placement (E.T,) or merchandise or wherever a buck can be made
this is not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, it just is
therefore, profitability is much more important than quality
